It’s not often that you see a grizzly bear in the heat of summer, and even less so one close enough to photograph. Hayden Valley is always a good bet though, if you want to test your luck on a summer visit.
We’ve been driving the upper or lower loop several days a week this summer, in search of wildlife under the best evening light. Even the least productive day had one bald eagle and one deer. Other days we would find several bull elk, bison, pika (get out of the car to see these!), otters, and yesterday a grizzly bear. Summer isn’t the best season of the year for wildlife, but they are still around if you know where and when to look.
Less than a mile away from this sighting is where I photographed another big male grizzly last October. The Yellowstone River in and near the Hayden Valley always seems to be a wildlife hotspot. There is currently a very visible wolf pack (with pups) that can be seen from a few of the overlooks in Hayden Valley. Thousands of visitors are getting a glimpse of what may be their first and only wolf sightings!
